Highlights of 2005

Posted by Kenneth Birch on December 31, 2005

A night a few months ago I was insomniac and instead started making lists. One of them was ‘Highlights of 2005’, which turned out to be a good idea. For then it became clear that this has, in fact, been a very eventful year. Perhaps not the best ever, but certainly not boring.

It’s been a year of studying, working, and lots of traveling: 4 continents, 6 countries. One new country (Singapore) and five new cities (Washington, St. Louis, Los Angeles, Adelaide, Singapore). Not bad at all.

Anyway, the list is probably incomplete, but here it is, in alphabetical (i.e., no particular) order:

  • Celebrating my 25th birthday
  • Choir trip, Norway
  • Christmas in Sydney, once again
  • City-break, Berlin
  • Clubbing with M and L
  • Discussing church politics with Dad
  • Getting to know S
  • Hanging out in Qantas Club lounges
  • Kangaroo Island, SA
  • Late summer with good friends, Aarhus
  • Leading worship, Aarhus Café Church
  • Learning Mandarin (well, just a little bit)
  • Long talks with K
  • Making new friends, Sydney
  • Meeting S and J in St. Louis
  • Mum visiting
  • Preaching at Vejlefjord
  • Renewed friendship with C
  • Surfing, Bondi Beach
  • Switchfoot concert, St. Louis
  • Working as intern, SPD

Thanks to all who made it possible, and Happy New Year! I look forward to seeing you next year.

Stepping Out

Posted by Kenneth Birch on December 23, 2005

I quit my job this week.

By February 1st, I will complete my BA degree in Information Science, and on the same date my part job as webmaster for the SDA Church in Denmark will be officially over, after 6 years. Right now, I have no idea what I’ll be doing after that.

This was no easy decision. I like my security. But over the last few months I have been able to rest fairly assured in the fact that God will take care of me and give me something meaningful to do. During the last week, I chose to quit completely, instead of hanging on while searching for something else. That decision was taken amid a great deal of prayer, and for now I’m confident that things will work out.

Not to say that my faith is any better than everybody else’s. For it’s not. But this being one of the most difficult decisions yet in my life, having God as a part of it has made it significantly easier. And has brought me closer to Him.

So basically, I’m looking for a job–anyone hiring? :)

Now I’m all ready for four weeks of summer holiday (arrived in Sydney last night :D ), in which I’ll have time to relax and dream about the future. After that, who knows? Right now: only one, and it’s not me.

Mob Violence, the Aussie Way

Posted by Kenneth Birch on December 11, 2005

I’m genuinely saddened.

RACIAL violence erupted in several Sydney suburbs last night…” (SMH).

I’m also a little frightened. I leave for Sydney in little more than a week. Fortunately, this is way on the other side of town. But still.

No single group is at fault here, and the troublemakers are obvioulsy a minority, albeit a vocal one. But once again, an image of perfection is shattered. I usually think of Sydney as one of the best places in the world. It probably still is. But not completely. Where do dreams go to die?

A lot of things are wrong with the world, but when you try to focus on the good stuff (as you should) the wake-up calls can be shocking.

Even if the trouble in Sydney is more a mob and social issue than a racial one, racism definitely surfaces as the visible rendering. Australia might not be the wonderful, multicultrual, immigrant country it claims to be, after all. So, where to go? Denmark has its own problems, but since I’m the native majority, I can sleep safely. Too easy, perhaps. America? Hardly perfect. Canada? Maybe. Unfortunately, a perfectly harmonious, egalitarian, tolerant, open, and free society will never be a reality in this world.

In the words of Michael Jackson, I don’t wanna spend my life being a color.

EDIT: You should also read Mel’s post on the issue.

Organizational Change

Posted by Kenneth Birch on December 8, 2005

It’s great with a night off from studying for exams, and tonight I ended up spending the evening in a café with a friend, discussing the world situation and church politics (as we have so many times before). We agreed on a lot of things, one of them being that we like this man:

If you’re Danish, you should have seen him on TV the last few days. If not, let me introduce: Torben M. Andersen, president of the Welfare Commission, professor of Economics, University of Aarhus. Opux has even attended some of his lectures. I have had no such luck.

The story, in brief, is this: The Danish welfare society faces substantial challenges in the next half century due to changes in demographics and globalization, to name a few. The Welfare Commission was created to give its recommendations as to what we should do about it; what changes should be made to current policies in order to cope with changing conditions. Denmark is currently experiencing growth and prosperity, it was thought best to start looking at changes while we’re on top. This Wednesday the commission presented its report. It had several controversial suggestions, sure, but overall their ideas sound very, very reasonable. The only problem is, politicians across the board have been quick to renounce the most far-reaching proposals. Even the prime minister was surprisingly reserved, and not the visionary he usually is. It’s at least three years to the next election, but still they all seem afraid to do what logically seems necessary. A lot of it will probably happen anyway, but not as part of the grand vision one could have hoped for.

This leads us on to church structure. A year and a half ago, at the Union Session of the SDA Church in Denmark, members passed a motion to create a Structural Commission and commence a thorough debate about the future and structure of the church in this country. A very good idea, indeed. Only problem is, the implementation has been all but absent. One attempt at an open meeting was made, but it was clear to all who were present that the administration had simply not understood its mandate.

I am hoping that this idea will not suffer the same slow death as so many good ideas before it. For we simply cannot afford to ignore reality. I believe the Seventh-Day Adventist Church has a future in Denmark. But not without a vision. Not without necessary changes, some of which may be painful. We need to address the issues.

We need a Structural Commission that is visionary, competent, passionate, efficient, and attentive. We need honest debate. We need controversial, but far-sighted ideas. We need consulting from experts on the field, people like George Knight, Barry Oliver, and perhaps Torben M. Andersen. I’m aware that the results of such a commission may very well recieve the same half-hearted reactions that the Welfare Commission spurred from Danish politicians. But at least we will have the debate, the discussions, the suggestions, and the comments.

It is never too soon to be contemplating the future. As Adventists, waiting for the Second Coming of Christ, this should come as no surprise to us.

Erotic Bible Stories

Posted by Kenneth Birch on December 4, 2005

Last month, Mel had a link to The Brick Testamenta pretty cool site with a guy who’s illustrated Bible stories by use of Lego blocks. They are pretty well-made and mostly funny, although some might raise an eybrow over the explicit sexual content. (But hey, it’s in the Bible.)

Now a youth group from a German church takes it one step further, using real-life models. They have compiled a 2006 calendar with illustrated, erotic scenes from the Bible. BBC has the story. It’s bound to attract some attention.

The calendar has its own website at www.bibelkalender.de. If you understand German, check it outnot surprisingly, the forum has a lot of entries, some praising, some vehemently opposing.

I don’t quite know what to make of it myself. Maybe I should place an orderthey’d make great Christmas presents :) But seriously, is this doing mostly good or harm? I honestly don’t know.

What do you think?
